thank you! although i did have formal traiing it was pretty much before photoshop was widely used so i am pretty much self taught. its taken 4 years to get up to this level. i use alot of photoshop brushes, try deviant art for brushes, there are thousands on there and play around. You will find alot of trial and error but once you get it right it sticks! use overlay as the image layer type, again play around with different colours, they will all give a different sort of effect. It does help when you have good photos to work from which i have good access to for my work and i am allowed to use them as i wish as well as for their own projects.
