David Carson needs no introduction. He was described by Creative Review magazine as "the most famous graphic designer on the planet".

Although graduating with a degree in sociology and starting his career as a teacher, a design course one summer holidays encouraged him to become a graphic designer. Today his studio’s work has been recognised the New York Type Directors Club, the American Center for Design and I.D. to name but a few. Carson and his work have been featured in over 180 magazine and newspaper articles around the world, including a feature in Newsweek magazine, and a front page article in The New York Times.

David's work continues to be subjective and largely driven by intuition, with an emphasis on experimenting with ways to communicate in a variety of mediums. Carson remains a hands-on designer, keeping his studio small and mobile.

Carson’s first book, The End of Print, is the top selling graphic design book of all time. In this exclusive video he explains his current viewpoint. Although the computer may be the sketchpad of today, Carson maintains that design is all about individuality and passion, and the challenge is to provide a creative environment for good design to flourish.

I found some books David had written at http://www.gingkopress.com/_cata/_grap/fotograf.htm It's a great resource for design books. They also seem to be all available on Amazon too.

I am bloody crazy I suppose, because I use Quark for my bookkeeping, stationary and my graphic design. I still use 4.11 because it works well for me. I also have 7, which does certain things well such as Photoshop image imports, opacity and PDF exporting. I like Xpert Scale in 4.11 - it works, whereas in 7 it is less user friendly. I am more emotive and intuitive and design best in Quark 4.11. I think and work on my computers which are in my art room with my music, photographs and pictures. My macs are another tool that have replaced spray mount, poster boards, acetate overlays, tracing paper, my darkroom is a scanner and my bow-tie is really a camera! I still work with film. It rocks when scanned and imported into Quark. Carson rocks. He always makes me smile. I look forward to working with him again, this time on my new book. Alan Messer, photographer.

I have a couple of questions. What are your thoughts on the future of quark and also do you have an opinion on pacing photos into illustrator?

I can't agree with you more, David. We are visual and tactile creatures so pencil, ink and paint will continue. Our sense are the conduit of all communication and expression, the way we experience and interact with our environment. My environment may be a chaos of piles, somewhat dismal and...furry, but it definitely has an individual character.
