Digital publishing is breaking on to the scene with an ultimate force that only Chuck Norris should have the authority to command. Bolstered by the incredible sales of tablets (read iPad — and maybe the android… but if we’re really honest, it’s all about the iPad), the evidence is overwhelming that this is the next step for those of us who humbly call ourselves graphic designers. Designing for a cause

Designers are naturally empathetic. We need to experience empathy so that we are able to connect with our audience when creating designs and brands that survive off of the emotional connections the customers/users of whatever product experience. It is very important to stay in touch with those feelings and let them guide you in your design and life. Just like musicians, a vocalist without any emotion in the words they are singing sounds very monotone and boring - so too is it with design. Practicing what you preach is the best way to really support your feelings and by extension your work. Offering pro-bono work to a charity or creating a campaign, funded out of your own pocket, to raise awareness for a struggling non-profit are just a couple ways of living empathy...... plus...

If 2008 was the year of victory for many Americans, it was also our preferred art form: graphic design. There is no doubt that graphic art has played a key role in the Obama campaign, for both the primaries and during the general election. Logo for campaign signs, through the website, leaflets sent by mail and advertising, branding and execution of the Obama campaign is a watershed in American politics.... plus...
